Putting the Air Fryer to the Ultimate Test

I’m really not one to get into trendy gadgets for the kitchen so when the air fryer came out I really wasn’t interested. However, its stuck around for such a long time and I get at least one email a week asking if I want to try it. So I decided to put the air fryer to the ultimate test. Alex and I decided to make 8 different recipes, all varying in ingredients, methods, temperature, and cooking times. We made patatas bravas to beef jerky to an even more complicated milk bun! Check out how we did here and what our favorite thing was!

The first thing I decided to put to the air fryer test was the patatas bravas. They came out golden and crispy just like you expect out of a restaurant. They were done in no time and they tasted amazing. Super crispy and barely any fat!

Korean Chicken Wings


  • 1 pound of chicken wings

  • Sprinkle of salt

  • Sprinkle of black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon of garlic Powder

  • ½ tablespoon of baking powder

  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon of Honey

  • 1 teaspoon Rice vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon Gochujang

  • Scallions to top

  • Sesame seeds to top


  1. In a mason jar combine soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, rice vinegar, and gochujang.

  2. Now, onto the chicken wings. Sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and baking soda. Toss everything to combine.

  3. Preheat the air fryer to 350 and fry the wings for 30 minutes.

  4. Take them out and toss them with your gochujang sauce. Top with sesame seeds and scallions and go to town on them!

Beef Jerky:


  • ½ pound of flank steak

  • 1/8 cup of soy

  • 1/8 cup of brown sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon silk chili


  1. Cut up the flank steak against the grain into 3 – 5 inch long pieces.

  2. Place everything into a bowl and add in the soy, brown sugar, paprika, ginger, salt, cinnamon, and silk chili.

  3. Toss to combine and let marinade for 1 day.

  4. The next day, preheat the air fryer to 180 and air fry for 60 minutes.

Patatas Bravas:


  • 3 medium size potatoes

  • 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil

  • ½ teaspoon of salt

  • Mayo

  • Ketchup

  • Fresh Chives


  1. Chopped up the potatoes into 1 inch cubes and put them in water for 30 minutes so that the starch can come off otherwise they will burn in the air fryer.

  2. Drain them off and pat dry them. Next, add in the grapeseed oil and salt.

  3. We are going to go against the grain and use a double air fry method. Set your air fryer to 350 and cook the potatoes for 15 minutes.

  4. Give them a good shake and then bump up the heat to 380 and cook for another 10 minutes.

  5. Take them out of the air fryer and then place them onto a plate. Drizzle on some mayo, ketchup, and sprinkle on some chives!

Apple Pie


  • 2 tablespoons of butter

  • 2 apples

  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 2 tablespoon of light muscovado sugar

  • 1 tablespoon of flour

  • ⅓ cup of water

  • 1 pack of pie dough


  1. Cut the apples into small cubes and set aside.

  2. In a pot, combine the apples and butter and cook until the apples start to soften. (About 5 minutes)

  3. Then add in the cinnamon, brown sugar, and flour and give everything a stir.

  4. Add in the water and stir until sauce forms. Shut off the heat and let it cool off.

  5. Cut your pie dough into 6 even pieces and scoop about a tablespoon of apple pie filling in the center.

  6. Flip the dough over, crimp edges, and give it an egg wash.

  7. Air fry at 320 for about 15 minutes and then go ahead and give it a try.

Milk Bread:



  • ⅓ Cup of bread flour

  • ½ Cup of milk


  • 2 ½ Cups of bread flour

  • ½ Cup milk

  • 1 Packet or 2 teaspoons of dried yeast

  • ¼ Cup of sugar

  • 1 Egg

  • 1 Teaspoon salt

  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter


  1. Tangzhong or a starter; add a little bit of flour and milk into the pot. And just stir that around on low heat for 5 minutes until that really thicken up, almost like a roux. And let that cool down on the side.

  2. Activate your yeast; Take a medium-size bowl or cup, add in a little bit of warm milk (90-100°F), yeast and sugar, then let that activate for 10 minutes until it’s nice and bubbly.

  3. Take a big mixing bowl, add inactivated yeast, beaten eggs, flour, tangzhong, a little salt and mix that up until it starts to come together.

  4. Take your dough out from the mixing bowl, and put it on the floured surface and start kneading until it starts to form together.

  5. Let the dough sit, let those glutens relax a little bit.

  6. After the dough is relaxed, add in some butter. It’s going to be hard to knead with the butter in at first, but eventually, this will come together. Knead for about 5 minutes. If you feel that your dough is too wet, add in some more flour.

  7. After kneading it, let it rise for about an hour to an hour and a half until it doubles its size.

  8. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces and let it proof in the air fryer basket until noticeably puffy and double in size.

  9. Egg wash the bread roll with a mixture of egg and milk then top it off with sesame seeds.

  10. Preheat the oven to 310 degrees and air fry for 10 minutes.

  11. Once the 10 minutes are up knock down the temperature to 240 for another 5 minutes. The internal temperature of the bread rolls should be 185 – 190 degrees.

Parmesan Broccoli


  • 1 head of broccoli

  • Drizzle of grapeseed oil

  • Sprinkle of salt

  • Parmesan


  1. Cut the broccoli into small florets and place them into a bowl.

  2. Give them a spray of canola oil and a sprinkle of salt. Toss everything to combine.

  3. Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees and air fry for 8 minutes.

  4. Grate over some parmesan cheese on top and air fry it at 370 for another 4 minutes.

Twice Air Fried Maduros:


  • 2 yellow almost black plantains

  • Canola oil spray


  1. Peel and cut three very yellow and ripe plantains into 1 ½ inch rounds.

  2. Place them in a bowl and give them a spray with a little bit of canola oil.

  3. Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees fahrenheit and air fry the plantains for 12 minutes. Give it a check, a shake, and smash them into coins.

  4. Place them back into the air fryer for another 8 minutes.

  5. Once they are done, place them onto a plate, and drizzle with maple syrup and cinnamon!

Kale Chips


  • 1 pound of kale, hand ripped into large chunks.

  • Sprinkle of salt

  • Sprinkle of pepper

  • Little bit of grapeseed oil

  • 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast


  1. In a bowl, toss together the kale pieces, nutritional yeast, and oil until everything is combined.

  2. Preheat the airfryer at 180 degrees and fry the chips for 20 minutes.
