Can You Make a Good French Fry in The Air Fryer?

There are two food items that gets cooked in the air fryer more than any other food. The first are chicken wings and the second are french fries. In my first air fryer ranking episode, I crowned the best air fryer chicken wing out of 6 different methods that you can check out here. Now, we are moving onto everyones beloved side dish, the french fry! Is it there a technique out there to amp up the crispy level of air fried French fries? Is it even possible? Is there a method out there that can result in a fry so crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside that would trick you into thinking it was actually deep fried? I tried out 6 different French fry techniques from the simplistic and well known single fry method to triple step Heston fry to debunk everyones air fried French fry conundrum. Single Fry

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium sized russet potato
  • Drizzle of oil
  • Sprinkle of Salt

 

Instructions:

    1.  Start by cutting your fries into uniform stick shape. Let it soak in clean water for 30 minutes.
    2. Drain out the fries and dry them using a dry and clean towel.
    3. Place them into a bowl and drizzle on a small amount of oil. Give it a good shake to evenly coat.
    4. Spread them out in a single layer in your air fryer and fry at 380 for 25 minutes. Give it a shake half way through.
    5. Once they are done, sprinkle them with salt and enjoy with your All Purpose Dipping sauce.

      Twice Fry

      Ingredients:

      • 1 medium sized russet potato
      • Drizzle of oil
      • Sprinkle of Salt

       

      Instructions:

      1. Start by cutting your fries into uniform stick shape. Let it soak in clean water for 30 minutes.
      2. Drain out the fries and dry them using a dry and clean towel.
      3. Place them into a bowl and drizzle on a small amount of oil. Give it a good shake to evenly coat.
      4. Spread them out in a single layer in your air fryer and fry at 330 for 15 minutes.
      5. Dump them onto a plate and place int he fridge to cool down and dry off.
      6. Place them back into the air fryer, give it a spray of oil, and fry at 380 for 10 minutes.
      7. Take them out and lightly salt them. Enjoy!

        The Heston Fry

        Ingredients:

        • 1 medium sized russet potato
        • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
        • Drizzle of oil
        • Sprinkle of Salt

          Instructions:

          1. Start by cutting your fries into uniform stick shape. Let it soak in clean water for 30 minutes.
          2. Drain out the fries and dry them using a dry and clean towel.
          3. In a pot of hot lightly simmering water, drop in some baking soda, and then add in your dries. Boil for 10 minutes.
          4. Drain and then layer them onto a wire rack to dry and cool them down for 30 minutes.
          5. Next, place them into a flat pan and coat them in oil. Place them into the air fryer and bake them for 330 for 15 minutes.
          6. Take them out and place them back on the wire rack. Cool them down in the fridge for 30 minutes.
          7. Finally, place them back in the oven, give them a spray of oil and fry at 380 for 7 minutes.
          8. Lightly salt them and enjoy!

            Breaded Fry

            Ingredients:

            • 1 medium sized russet potato
            • 1 egg, beaten
            • 1/4 cup of flour
            • 1/4 cup of bread crumbs
            • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
            • Drizzle of oil
            • Sprinkle of Salt

              Instructions:

              1. Start by cutting your fries into uniform stick shape. Let it soak in clean water for 30 minutes.
              2. Drain out the fries and dry them using a dry and clean towel.
              3. In a pot of hot lightly simmering water, drop in some baking soda, and then add in your dries. Boil for 10 minutes.
              4. Drain and then layer them onto a wire rack to dry and cool them down for 30 minutes.
              5. Next, gently dip the fries into the flour, then beat egg and lastly the breadcrumbs. Place them onto a wire rack and repeat until all the French fries are coated.
              6. Spray the bottom of your air fryer and place the fries gently into the basket. Fry at 330 for 10 minutes.
              7. Take them out and let them cool down for 15 minutes.
              8. Place them back into the fryer and give them a little spray of oil. Fry at 380 for 5 minutes.
              9. Lightly salt them and enjoy!

                Cornstarch Fry

                Ingredients:

                • 1 medium sized russet potato
                • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
                • 1 teaspoon of cornstarch
                • Spray of oil
                • Sprinkle of Salt

                  Instructions:

                  1. Start by cutting your fries into uniform stick shape. Let it soak in clean water for 30 minutes.
                  2. Drain out the fries and dry them using a dry and clean towel.
                  3. In a pot of hot lightly simmering water, drop in some baking soda, and then add in your dries. Boil for 10 minutes.
                  4. Drain and then layer them onto a wire rack to dry and cool them down for 30 minutes.
                  5. Place them into a bowl or flat pan and coat them in corn starch.
                  6. Drop them into the air fryer and give them a spray of oil. Fry at 330 for 10 minutes.
                  7. Give them a second spray and fry at 380 for 8 minutes.
                  8. Lightly salt them and enjoy!

                    Redemption Fry

                    Ingredients:

                    • 1 medium sized russet potato
                    • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
                    • Drizzle of oil
                    • Sprinkle of Salt

                      Instructions:

                      1. Start by cutting your fries into a larger uniform stick shape. Let it soak in clean water for 30 minutes.
                      2. Drain out the fries and dry them using a dry and clean towel.
                      3. In a pot of hot lightly simmering water, drop in some baking soda, and then add in your dries. Boil for 15 minutes.
                      4. Drain and then layer them onto a wire rack to dry and cool them down for 30 minutes.
                      5. Next, place them into a flat pan and coat them in oil. Place them into the air fryer and bake them for 330 for 15 minutes.
                      6. Take them out and place them back on the wire rack. Cool them down in the fridge for 30 minutes.
                      7. Finally, place them back in the oven, give them a spray of oil and fry at 380 for 10 minutes.
                      8. Lightly salt them and enjoy!

                        Leftover Fry

                        Ingredients:

                        • Leftover French fries
                        • Drizzle of oil

                          Ingredients:

                          1. Place the leftover French fries into the air fryer and fry at 380 for 6 minutes.
                          2. Enjoy with all purpose sauce!

                            All Purpose Dipping Sauce:

                            Ingredients:

                            • 1/4 cup of ketchup
                            • 1/4 cup of mustard
                            • 1/4 cup of mayo
                            • 1 teaspoon of soy sauce
                            • 1 teaspoon of sriracha
                            • 1/4 cup of chopped pickles, finely chopped
                            • 1 tablespoon of pickle brine
                            • 1 tablespoon of parsley, finely chopped

                              Instructions:

                              1. Add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix to combine. Place in the fridge until ready to use.

                              Air Fryer French Fries

                              Ingredients:

                              Single Fry

                              • 1 medium sized russet potato
                              • Drizzle of oil

                              Twice Fry

                              • 1 medium sized russet potato
                              • Drizzle of oil
                              • Sprinkle of Salt

                              The Heston Fry

                              Breaded Fry

                              All Purpose Dipping Sauce:

                              • 1/4 cup of ketchup

                              3. In a pot of hot lightly simmering water, drop in some baking soda, and then add in your dries. Boil for 10 minutes.

                              6. Drop them into the air fryer and give them a spray of oil. Fry at 330 for 10 minutes.
                              7. Give them a second spray and fry at 380 for 8 minutes.
                              8. Lightly salt them and enjoy!
